Back on June 27th, the first day of Google I/O 2012, Google had mentioned that we would see the source code for their newest Android software version, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, get released in July. Well, it seems they were right on schedule as the source code for jelly bean was released today into the AOSP or Android Open Source Project. Visions of jelly beans will most certainly be in the dreams of many android users who are still waiting to get their hands on the newest piece of android software. Thanks to the developers that will be getting right to work on this drop, users won’t have to wait long I’m sure. It will be interesting to see who are among the first teams out of the gate with a build. Along with all the work on the ROMs that will be going on tonight you can bet that we will most likely start to see tiny little tidbits of jelly bean goodness find their way to the web as early as midnight. For those who are expecting to wait a while for a stable or even nightly release of a full build from their favorite flavor of android ROM, you just might be able to grab a little taste of 4.1 in the form of certain features like skins, boot animations etc. Although this isn’t quite full jelly bean, it just might hold over the power flashers until a full ROM is available.
If you’re a proud owner of the new Nexus 7 tablet, or using the Galaxy nexus that were given away at i/o, then this little back and forth between Google’s Jean-Baptiste Queru and others might be of particular interest to you. Hop on over to the Android Building Google Group to check out the entirety. The best part though is that Jean is basically stating that there are proprietary binaries that have been dropped for the Galaxy nexus and Nexus 7 tablet, making these the first two devices that will get full ROMS. Following up on these two amazing devices will be the nexus s and Motorola xoom. While she didn’t say that they are readily available they can’t be too far off. This is extremely good news for those of us out there holding the aforementioned products, although there is no word on when to expect the software push. While this good news is perhaps just enough to get you all excited about what’s to come, I can’t wait to see what Team Kang and Cyanogenmod do with this by tomorrow afternoon. It’s going to be a long night for some out there. If I didn’t already have the day off tomorrow, I just might be tempted to skip work and stay up into the early morning hours skimming the internets for any and every piece of custom software based off this source code. At least not for me as I’m pretty burnt out on jelly belly’s from the little android candy containers that I brought home from I/O.
