Vodafone Australia has scheduled the roll out of the much-anticipated Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for at least one of its devices: The Nexus S. According to their blog, the update is set to hit by 1:ooPM AEST, July 19th. And yes, that is very soon. Interestingly, they’ve listed the Galaxy Nexus in upgrade limbo stating its status as: “Manufacturer preparing update for submission to Vodafone for testing.”
I think it’s important to remember that this is a GSM based update for the Nexus S so for the moment, there doesn’t look like any CMDA (Sorry Sprint users) love any time soon. Though, I imagine that this update will keep some intrepid developers awake for the next few weeks.
What stood out more to me than the Nexus S update was the lack of a Galaxy Nexus update. The Nexus S is a device dating all the way back to December 2010 with a relatively unimpressive (by today’s standards) single-core 1Ghz Hummingbird processor. Its sibling, the Galaxy Nexus, boasts a much more modern arsenal with its dual-core CPU, was the first phone with Ice Cream Sandwich, and was released nearly a year later. Not to mention, Google showed it off using Jelly Bean at the I/O conference.
Upon visiting the Nexus’s Google Play page, it states that the GNexus is the “latest smartphone from Google, soon with Android 4.1, Jelly Bean.” Digging a little further, the site says, “Galaxy Nexus is the first phone with Android 4.1, Jelly Bean.” Well, that may be true for a small group of developers fortunate to make the I/O conference. But it seems that for those in Australia and quite possibly Europe, the Nexus S users will be the first to have a bite of Jelly Bean.Seem to plenty of rumors being thrown out on the internet that the GSM version of the Nexus S will see Jelly Bean Update tomorrow or in the next few days! Nexus S owners stateside will be very happy to hear that!
