From a rather “meh” device, to dozens upon dozens from multiple manufacturers, Android has grown up quite a bit and still continues to cause us to crave sweets. Google has really improved the interface over the years to what we have now, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which is both smoother and faster with the great feature that is Google Now.
IDC or the International Data Corporation, released some new statistics which show just how well Android is stacking up to the competition. For the second quarter of 2012, there were 154 Million total smartphones shipped, 104.8 Million of those running Android. That means over 68% of the smartphones shipped this past quarter were Android. Pretty dang impressive.
This gives Android 68.1% smartphone OS market share for this second quarter and goes to show just how well it’s moving forward. In a rather trailing second, iOS comes in with 16.9 percent market share, BlackBerry with 4.8 percent, Symbian with 4.4 percent, Windows Phone 7 with 3.5 percent, and Linux with 2.3 percent.
Android mostly has Samsung to thank for the increased market share as they accounted for 44% of all Android smartphones shipped. Apple does have the iPhone 5 release coming up and will be announced at their event in September, as when the next generation device usually is. That launch will definitely cut into Android’s market share. Let’s not forget that just because Android is gaining more and more traction, doesn’t mean everything is fine and dandy.
Apple has been going at it with Samsung in court and the outcome of that could greatly affect what Samsung has put out and will put out into the marketplace.
