Gaming has quickly become one of the hottest topics surrounding Android and with better graphics and processors alike, we can now experience much more detailed games on devices. Not to mention, with upcoming graphics chips from ARM, we could even see console level graphics on the devices that you and I have now.
Android powered gaming though isn’t just for smartphones and tablets. Last month, a new kind of gaming console emerged literally out of nowhere called OUYA. For those who aren’t familiar, OUYA is a gaming console that’s supposed to be priced at $99 and is powered by Android. It offers a nice selection of games and is available to developers. From there, games can be free to play and of course developers can offer a free demo, have just in-game items, or require a subscription.
Today, their Kickstarter ended and was nothing short of amazing. With an original funding goal of $950,000, they ended up raising a whopping $8,596,475, eight times more than they were hoping. This of course has caused concern about the product being able to be delivered by March 2013. Many Kickstarter products in the past that have gone on to raise well above their goal, have been plagued with delays.
Either way, OUYA appears to be a very exciting product and with the right games, UI, performance, and price, could just be the next hottest gaming console to date. Here’s a brief recap of the specs:
- NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB internal flash storage
- HDMI out with 1080p support
- Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi, USB 2.0, and Ethernet
- Wireless controller which is very similar in setup to the Xbox 360 controller
- Powered by Android 4.0
