Remember the days of free phones? Maybe it was a generic BlackBerry or an entry level Android phone, but chances are, it was pretty underpowered. But hey, it’s free on a two year contract so what can you expect? With technology and hardware getting cheaper, mid-level phones are more affordable and some even cost next to nothing on a contract.

One of those phones is the Samsung Galaxy Stellar with some decent specs. While the camera might not be “stellar”, what’s underneath is pretty dang good for the price of free. Of course though, free is a funny word when it comes to carriers. You may be paying nothing for the phone, but over two years in services, you’re shelling out a nice chunk of change for the service.

  • 4 inch 800×480 WVGA display
  • 1.2GHZ dual-core SnapDragon processor
  • 768MB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage
  • microSD card slot with support up to 32GB
  • 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera
  • 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, 4G LTE
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

The Galaxy Stellar will be available September 6th for $50, but comes with a $50 mail-in rebate so you can get it down to free. If you need a phone from Verizon and don’t want to shell out $199 or more, this might not be a bad phone to go with it. Or if you want to get an okay Android phone for a family member, it’s a good place to start.
