Earlier today ARM announced that they would be introducing a new chip in 2014/2015 that will increase performance by three times. While keeping the power cost the same. Named the A-53 and A-57, these chips will be ARM’s first 64-bit chips.
Noel Hurley, ARM’s VP of its processor division noted that :
“The A-57 delivers three times the performance of today’s mobile phones with the same power budget and the A-53 delivers four times the power efficiency of today’s mobile phones.” He went on to say, “It’s been a rare opportunity to start with a clean sheet of paper to develop a new architecture,” adds Hurley,” we paid particular attention to power efficiency. Instead of just adding another 32-bits we have stripped out complexity and made it a very power-efficient architecture.”
He also noted that they expect the Silicon to be done in 2013/14 and the first devices to roll out in 2014/15. So far Broadcom, Calxeda, AMD, HiSilicon, Samsung, and ST have all signed up to license the A-57 and A-53 chips. Leaving to wonder with a powerful mobile processor manufacture like Samsung buying the chips, will we soon see a 64-bit version of Android popping up.
What new features and power could Android add to the OS by incorporating a 64-bit version, as well as what could gaming be like of a 64-bit version of Android? Would you be looking for a Android 64-bit version if it was available? Let us know in the comments below!
