If anything is becoming clear about this week’s worth of news is that it has been dominated by big screen phones. First we had HTC’s stunning Butterfly J that, for some unknown reason is not coming to the states. This week we also got some more photos of the Oppo Finder, again packing a 5-inch 1920×1080 HD display, just like HTC’s new beast. Huawei however, don’t think that this is big enough and are working a device packing a 6.1-inch screen. Phone, tablet? You decide.
The Huawei Ascend Mate that’s currently in-development device is apparently going to be backing the following specs:
- A 6.1″ Display at 1920×1080
- A 1.8 Ghz quad-core processor from Huawei, the K3V3
- 2GB of RAM
- 4000 mAh battery
- All this in a 9mm chassis
- Jelly Bean onboard
Huawei are no stranger to brining their own SoCs to market, the Ascend D Quad came with their K3V2 processor. It’s interesting that they do this but, when you think about it, if they have the capability to do so, why not? After all, there’s no fun in making a phone using somebody else’s processors. This is what makes Samsung able to make a vast variety of smartphones, having the ability to source your own components, no matter how many or how few is nothing short of desirable. It seems the trend of high-end phones getting bigger and bigger isn’t going anywhere, after all, the Galaxy Note line has done pretty well but, the S-Pen does provide extra functionality. So far as we can tell, the Huawei Ascend Mate is going to be just a massive phone with a whole lot of power in it. Personally, I don’t think I could deal with a phone of this size but if they were to put the Jelly Bean tablet UI from the Nexus 7 on here I could see it working out.
When it comes to pricing and availability there’s no word on anything just yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if we were to hear something about it at MWC next year, or maybe at CES knowing Huawei.
