Another new ASUS devices has popped up over at the FCC. This device is called the Qube with Google TV Dongle. The documentation from the FCC reveals that its designed to be paired with a set-top box which is named the Qube. Currently there are plenty of products using Google’s smart TV operating System a.k.a. Google TV. But it appears that the Qube will be much more than the Logitech Revue and the others we’ve seen in the past.
Now a source is claiming that this device is a Nexus device. Which would give us a reason as to why the Nexus Q disappeared before it was even on sale. Other than it being an overpriced paper weight. The FCC filing doesn’t tell us much about the ASUS Qube. There also aren’t any pictures of this dongle yet. But it is clear that the dongle does not have a processor and would not be able to be plugged into a TV and run Google TV, due to the lack of the processor. But it does have Wi-Fi, and RF connectivity, the latter being for a wireless keyboard and touchpad which are probably going to be used to control the Qube dongle.
In addition to the Qube dongle, two apps designed for the Qube have appeared on the Play Store. Including O!Mobile Remote and O!Mobile Control Center. It looks like the remote app is simply part of the control center and offers a “cloud media streaming service”. It also appears that the two apps aren’t all that attractive looking based on the UI, and is probably a prototype. Which leaves us wondering why either of these have been published to the Google Play Store. Guess someone flipped the switch prematurely?
The “Nexus Qube” sounds pretty cool, right? We’ve talked about the Nexus Q before on our podcast, and how it might make a comeback in 2013. We’ve also joked about it being cut in half for the wireless charging docks we saw for the Nexus 4. But if it doesn’t come back and the Qube replaces it, would you buy it?
