For many people outside of the US, you don’t have access to Google Voice. With the rumors of Google working with Dish network to create a wireless carrier that would be centered around Google Voice and it being data only of course, it sounds like Google is working to bring Voice to other parts of the world, and Canada could be next. Google Voice allows you to have one inbox where you can text from almost anywhere, even your desktop. Google Voice also allows voicemail transcription, which so far hasn’t worked all that well in most cases. Also in the US you can port your number over to Google and make all your calls much cheaper.
Mobile Syrup is reporting that they received some tips that Google Voice can now be used to forward existing US-based numbers to Canadian cellphones. In the past this was not able to be done. Calls to Google Voice numbers are also being correctly routed to the right local number.
Text messages are also working the same way in Canada right now. So it looks like we are on our way to seeing Google Voice hitting Canada officially. We should see an announcement soon. But Google might say something about it at CES in January.
It also looks like to be able to download the Google Voice app, you have to have a US-based number on file with Google for it to be sent to your phone. Also Canadian numbers are allowed to be confirmed from inside the Android app which is pretty interesting. Looks like Google Voice is indeed coming to our northern neighbors in Canada pretty soon.
Any of our Canadian readers excited about possibly getting Google Voice in Canada? Let us know in the comments. You can find out more information from this HowardForums thread, about Canadian numbers being confirmed.
