Well here’s some good news and bad news. Today Sony Mobile has provided an update on their progress with their Android 4.1 – Jelly Bean updates for it’s Xperia lineup. The company confirmed that their high-end devices, the Xperia T, TX and V would be getting Jelly Bean in February or March of 2013. Once those updates are out and being OTA’d to those devices, Sony will upgrade the Xperia J, Xperia P and Xperia Go starting in late March. The remaining 2012 devices getting Jelly Bean are the Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia ion and the Xperia acro S which will get the update in the weeks following.
Now for the bad news. It seems that the owners of the Xperia U, Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, and Xperia sola won’t be happy with this decision from Sony. But those devices will remain on Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich. This is pretty disappointing since those four devices are all less than nine months old. But what can we say, the mobile industry moves just that fast. And if Sony is really trying to make a splash in the US, this definitely won’t help them out. We also have no specific word on the US specific devices on AT&T such as the Xperia Ion and the Xperia TL. But hopefully they both will be getting a Jelly Bean update.
As usual with software updates, it’s a bit of good news mixed with some bad. But on the bright side, Sony says they are excited about their Xperia-specific functionality that’ll be coming to its devices with the Jelly Bean update. So those of you that own a device that will be getting Jelly Bean updates, you’ll have some new features and toys to play with.
And of course we’ll be seeing some new high-end stuff from Sony at CES next month in Las Vegas, as well as Mobile World Congress in February in Barcelona, Spain. We are expecting to see the Sony Yuga among others. But if Sony can’t even update devices that are less than nine months old, how do they expect to make these new devices top sellers? Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but I guess we’ll see in the next couple of months, now won’t we?
