It appears that lately Google has really been trying to push their Chrome OS. A couple months ago they launched the new Samsung Chromebook which was $249, and had some pretty great specs for the price, not to mention it had the same Exynos dual-core processor that the Nexus 10 has. Then a few weeks ago Google and Acer launched the C7 Chromebook for $199. This would feature an Intel processor, 2GB of RAM (expandable to 4GB), and a 350GB hard drive. Not bad for a sub-$200 laptop right? Well Google didn’t stop there. Today Acer has announced the C710-2605 which is a more beefed up version of their existing Chromebook. It features:
- 11.6-inch 1366×768 resolution
- 4GB of RAM
- 500GB internal storage
- 5,000mAh battery
- 1.1GHz Intel Celeron processor
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, HDMI-out, VGA, Ethernet, built-in webcam, and 3 USB ports
And just like every other Chromebook that’s hit the market recently, the C710-2605 comes with 100GB of Google Drive for two years. All of this for just $299? Sign me up. It may not be the best spec’ed laptop in the world. But for the price, it’s pretty darn good. And Google’s Chrome OS is pretty light-weight and great if you live in Chrome all day.
It doesn’t appear that this new Chromebook is available from Google Play just yet. But it’ll probably show up there later today, hopefully. We just hope that Google can sell this one better than the Nexus 4 and the Samsung Chromebook. The Samsung Chromebook is sold out pretty much everywhere right now with no ideas as to when it’ll be back in stock.
If you haven’t checked out Chrome OS, you’ll want to. It’s a pretty sleek OS that relies heavily on the internet. The OS is basically all the Chrome browser, using extensions, and web apps. Where Google already has documents and Drive, it could help you get a cheap but reliable piece of hardware to take on road trips with you and still get some work done.
