How to Create a Google+ Community

Earlier today, Google+ announced a cool new feature that is rolling out today, in addition to announcing that they have 235 million active users. The new feature is Communities, also known as groups on other sites like Facebook. At first glance, it looks like Google is trying to have Communities take over Google Groups, which would push more people to use Google+. Which is what Google wants anyways. But that’s just what I think, I could be completely wrong with that. Today Google is rolling out the Communities feature, it’s a slow roll out so some of you might have it now and some might not. So if you go to the link below and you get a 404 error, then you don’t have the new feature yet but its coming. Just be patient.

Now, how to create a Google+ Community:

  • Visit plus.google.com/communities
  • Click ‘Create Community’
  • Choose a Name
  • Then select whether you want to approve new members or not. Basically do you want it private or public?

Next you get to start customizing your new community. The profile picture for your community will be a 250×250, but only 200×250 will be visible. So if you’re creating a new logo, keep that in mind. Another thing to keep in mind is that the privacy cannot be changed. So be careful with whether you choose for it be private or public.

As I said above, right now you might get a 404 error, like I am. That is because it’s not quite rolled out for everyone yet. So be patient and it should be live for you later today or tomorrow.

Anyone have any ideas for what they are going to create a community for? Maybe an Ingress community? Or a community for your city? Let us know in the comments what you plan on creating, we’re interested.
