Last week we heard from Samsung Canada that Galaxy S3 devices in Canada would begin receiving their Android 4.1 – Jelly Bean update starting tomorrow, December 3rd. But we have even better news for those of you in Canada with the Galaxy S3. It appears that users on Rogers, TELUS, Bell and Virgin have already received the OTA (over-the-air) notification to grab the Android 4.1 update. To grab the update manually:
- Go to Settings
- Tap About Phone
- Tap System Software Updates
- Hit Check Now
If you can’t grab the update now, you should be able to get within the next couple of days. Usually with roll outs of updates like this it’ll be a staggered roll out. Meaning some will get it now, more will get it tomorrow, and continue for the next couple of weeks until everyone gets their update. This is to keep Samsung’s servers from getting overloaded and possible going down like the Google Play Store when they released the Nexus 4. But we don’t need to talk about that launch anymore right? We know Google messed up big time.
The Android 4.1 update for the Galaxy S3 includes all the great features in Android 4.1 including Project Butter, expandable notifications, and Google Now among many other new features and tweaks in the OS. Not to mention some new tweaks to Samsung’s custom overlay, Touchwiz. As you can see from the screen below, it appears the update is at least 300 megabytes. Since both updates have different sizes, one at 329MB and the other at 318MB.
Go grab your Jelly Beans, and make all your US Galaxy S3 friends jelly over Android 4.1. Although those in the US on T-Mobile or Sprint have already gotten their Android 4.1 update, so you only can mess with your Verizon and AT&T Galaxy S3 friends. If you grabbed the update let us know in the comments below how it’s working out for you and what your favorite feature of Android 4.1 is.
