When it comes to tablets it seems like the price war is very much at the forefront of the market right now. After all, both the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD are great tablets but, there’s no denying that the real area they excel in price, over specs and performance. This isn’t to say the Nexus 7 isn’t a powerful machine because, it is but price was more of a concern than anything else. For some time now we’ve been hearing about a $99 Nexus 7, which is a little bizarre because, isn’t the Nexus 7 cheap enough as it is?
Nevertheless, there is some more evidence that has come from sources talking to DigiTimes – so take this with a chunk of salt – that are suggesting a $99 Nexus 7 could well be a very real possibility thanks to some new technology that is cheaper to manufacturer and easier to apply in assembly. A new touchscreen technology called GFF – glass-film-film – is a technology from the O-Film Tech company which has just recently started shipping parts for the Nexus 7. The new GFF screen is said to make the Nexus 7 thinner a well.
This sort of talk is all pretty exciting but, a $99 Nexus 7 doesn’t exactly sound appealing and Google have already pushed the cost of the tablet as far down as they possibly can. A further price drop seems pretty unlikely however, we’re sure that it’d do well in the current market. With Amazon having a larger content offering and perhaps a selection that is easier for people to tap into, Google might want to try and compete on price alone. The Play Store isn’t exactly barren or anything, it’s been getting better and better but it’s pretty damn hard to go up against the brand power that is Amazon.
With tablets continually on the rise when it comes to adoption rates, 2013 is going to be a big year for the market and Google will want to be at the forefront of it. CES 2011 bought us the introduction of Honeycomb and who knows, CES 2013 could bring us Key Lime Pie and another push for Android on tablets.
