Updating the Galaxy Note to a mid-size tablet with S Pen abilities would seem like a natural progression for the series, and according to a newly released benchmark on NenaMark it’s likely in the works right now. This isn’t the first time that this model number, GT-N5100, has been spotted on the net, adding credibility to the idea that this is indeed the next generation of the Note tablet series.
The benchmark shows a tablet device with a screen resolution of 1280×720 on a 7-inch display. Other information that can be gleaned from the test results include a 1.6GHz Quad-Core processor with Mali-400MP GPU. The test also shows that the device is running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, so it will likely support the latest version right out of the box. The 7-inch screen also suggests more confirmation that the industry is indeed embracing the middle ground with smaller tablet and phablet devices that seem incredibly popular with consumers.
It also looks like the tablet will use the same Exynos 4412 chipset used in the Note II devices, which also goes by the name Pegasusq. There was some hope for Samsung to include the Cortex-A15, but as of now it doesn’t look like that will be the case. The Pegasusq is a great chipset itself, and should run very well on the new device. Back in September a device with the same model number also showed up with Wi-Fi ability and photographs reportedly taken from the devices camera have already popped up online as well.
The inclusion of an S Pen on a 7-inch device would also suggest that Samsung believes the screen size will serve well with note-taking consumers and those who aren’t absolutely dedicated to removing a stylus from tablet devices. There is already considerable competition in that size market, between the Kindle Fire, iPad-Mini and Nexus 7.
Very little additional information is available at this time as there has been no official confirmation from Samsung about the development of a 7-inch Galaxy series device. Nothing can yet be said about a release date or the expected abilities other than what was shown from these results. Rumor has it that we may see the device by CES Las Vegas 2013 or Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2013.
