Rumor: Samsung Galaxy "Frame" Making It's Debut At Mobile World Congress 2013

As of right now there appear to be no plans for Samsung to unveil their next flagship device, the Galaxy S IV at the 2013 Mobile World Congress but that’s not to say their booth will be a ghost town. A new rumor has surfaced of a phone called the Galaxy Frame.

The Galaxy Frame will most likely be a mid range phone along the lines of the Galaxy Grand or the Galaxy Ace 2. Also by naming it the “Frame” a conspiracy theorist could point to either a unique screen (small bezel?) or possibly something to do with pictures (picture frame?).

These days the term “mid range” is open for interpretation. Sure, a mid range device doesn’t have top of the line specs but they are nothing to sneeze at either. Here are the specs of the two comparable devices.

Galaxy Grand:

  • A five-inch screen with WVGA display of 480 x 800 resolution and 187 PPI
  • 1.2 GHz dual-core processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD)
  • Eight-megapixel main camera with a two megapixel webcam on the front
  • 2,100 mAh battery
  • Android 4.1.2

Galaxy Ace 2:

  • 3.8-inch WVGA screen
  • 800MHz dual-core processor
  • five-megapixel main camera with flash with a VGA webcam
  • 768MB of RAM
  • 4GB internal memory (Expandable via MicroSD)
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Obviously we’d like to see the Galaxy Frame closer in specs to the Grand, but the Ace 2 is an older device. A mid range device lately offers decent enough stats that the consumer can justify saving a few bucks picking one up. Sure it’s not the Note II or even the Galaxy S 3, but that’s not the person these phones were designed for. With more people jumping to pre paid services in tough economic times we can expect to see a flood of mid range phones in the coming year.

It’s still early and we can expect to hear more from Samsung in the build up to Mobile World Congress so if a device like this isn’t for you I’m sure one will come along that does get you excited. As of right now the only confirmed hard facts we have on the Galaxy Frame is  the model number (GT-S6810) and that it will run Android (obviously, right?), so stay tuned as more details emerge.
