We always knew that Samsung were happy to make phones and tablets with pretty much every screen size they have available but, with the Galaxy Grand things might be getting a little out of hand over at Samsung. We all know and love the Galaxy Note II and with it being available on all the four major carriers, more people than ever have been exposed to the phablet form factor. However, the Note II is a pretty expensive device and if you were to contemplate buying it outright then, your wallet would be pretty unhappy with you.
This is where the Galaxy Grand comes in – it’s Samsung’s attempt at bringing a larger screened device down to the affordable market, and judging by the specs below, it looks as though they’ve done it:
- 5.0″ WVGA LCD – that’s 800 x 480 giving you just, 168 ppi
- An Unknown dual-core 1.2Ghz CPU
- 1GB of RAM
- 8GB of Internal Storage – with a microSD card slot capable of taking up to 64GB
- Support for HSPA+ 21mbps
- Dual-SIM Version to launch first, with a single-SIM version coming later
- 2100 mAh battery
- Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean – with TouchWiz on top
That’s right, Samsung have put together a smartphone packing a 5″ display with a resolution of 800 x 480 which is a whole world away from the Droid DNA that packs a whopping 1920 x 1080 resolution into the same space. Of course, this device isn’t made for the high-end, and it’s certainly not heading there any time soon. I’m curious, just who do Samsung think will be buying this device but I’m sure a lot of people out there will just want a bigger screen, without paying the price for extras they might not necessarily use. As much as I like to write using pen and paper – I doubt I would use the S-Pen of the Galaxy Note, for example.
Samsung’s Galaxy Grand is a strange device, certainly but, it does have some redeeming qualities in that it provides an affordable option to those looking for a larger screen and it’s not as if Samsung are positioning this as a “bargain bucket” sort of device – far from it – it might be a quad-core powerhouse but with a dual-core CPU and Jelly Bean onboard it’ll be more than capable for most people’s use cases. I know that my Dad would enjoy a larger display for browsing the web but, I’m not sure even my aging father could get past such poor pixel density – could you?
