Samsung Ready to Show Off 5.5-inch Flexible Display at CES?

We’ve heard so much about these flexible displays from Samsung lately. And they sound really cool. And now it appears Samsung is getting one of these ready to showcase at CES in January. CES Attendees will get to see a beautiful 5.5-inch screen which would be intended for smartphones, this size is probably more geared for the Note 2 varieties of phones, with a 1280×720 resolution making it 720p and a 267 pixel density. But that’s not all. Samsung is also supposed to be showing off a Television-sized 55-inch screen as well in Las Vegas next month.

A flexible display is going to make for some rather unique designs in the coming months and years. But the only thing right now is that the display might be flexible, but the rest of the phone won’t be. Samsung has been building curved screens for quite some time now and placing them in some of their smartphones. They’ve also been shown off in some smaller display devices like the 4.5-inch WVGA screen that has about 200 pixels per inch.

It’s almost that time of year, time for lots of rumors, and lots of new devices being announced and launched. Over the next two months you’ll see tons of rumors, announcements and launches from all the manufacturers. But who else will have flexible displays? Probably not to many, except perhaps LG and Nokia who have already shown bendy prototypes in the past. But since most of them are currently losing money, while Samsung is doubling their money right now. In fact we heard earlier today, their share has doubled in the past calendar year. So of course they’ll be on the cutting edge of innovation, unlike the many other OEM’s out there.

So flexible displays, not sure how to feel about that. What do you think about them? Will they make it in the smartphone industry? They might be able to keep from breaking when you drop your device but we’ll have to wait and see about that.
