Samsung have been doing a pretty good job of keeping their current flagship up-to-date and as a lot of the US have been enjoying the 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update, the International Variant is getting 4.1.2 and some goodies, as well. I know what you’re thinking – why do I care about the International Variant, where’s my update? Well, Samsung updating the i930o overseas is a good sign that Samsung is happy with the stability and the quality of the update. In Europe there’s less restrictions on carrier testing and the option to buy the phone outright is a lot easier. If Samsung feel that the update is good enough to roll out, then it can’t be too far off of a release in the States – we hope.
Aside from the fixes that are contained in 4.1.2 itself, Sammy are treating Galaxy S III owners to some added goodies. The much rumored Multi-Window addition is indeed coming to the device as well as a new gallery, again lifted from the Galaxy Note II. It’s good to see that Samsung are continuing to improve on their phones, especially with Multi-Window, a feature that makes a lot of sense for a larger-sized device and one that goes hand in hand with Pop Up Play. There’s also “smart rotation” in the update as well. The new gallery, lifted from the Note II, is another interesting addition and again shows that Samsung are keen to mess around with Android quite a lot nowadays.
It’s unfortunate that the update is only headed to International users right now but I’m hoping that Samsung will work it out to bring the update to the States before the end of the year. Whether or not the carriers can get behind such a push is something we’ll have to wait and see about. Bets to see who gets there first? My money’s on Sprint as they were the first to update the Galaxy S III to Jelly Bean in the first place and they’ll want to keep that lead – especially with the upcoming BOGOF offer on the S III.
