AT&T Pushing Jelly Beans to Galaxy S3 Owners via OTA Update

We know the AT&T Galaxy S3 already got its update. But it was not an OTA update. So for those that haven’t yet grabbed the update through Kies for the past 6 weeks, you can grab the update the old-fashioned way. Going into Settings, tapping on About Phone and Check for Updates. It’s still pretty confusing as to why AT&T was only pushing the update out via Kies, which is Samsung’s desktop software. It’s a pretty bad piece of software that doesn’t always work. But today, we’ve seen numerous reports that the OTA update is finally upon us. It’s about time AT&T.

For those that haven’t gotten the update yet, you’re in for a real treat. Here’s what you’ll get with the Android 4.1.1 update from Samsung and AT&T:

  • Google Now
  • Expandable notifications
  • Project Butter
  • Various improvements and bug fixes for Touchwiz

The download size of the OTA is much smaller than the update from Kies. The update from Kies was around 700MB, which is the typical size of a full Touchwiz ROM. The OTA update is around 350MB in size, so it’s about half as large. We’re guessing you’re only getting the files that were changed instead of the entire ROM. Kinda like a delta update, like what Google Play does now for App updates.

Either way it’s great that AT&T has finally decided to offer this update Over-The-Air. It’ll probably be slower to download and update, but at least now you don’t have to worry about using Kies. Now where’s our Android 4.2 update, Samsung? Hopefully we’ll see that in another month or two, but don’t count on that. For those of you on AT&T that are still on Ice Cream Sandwich, you’ll want to grab this update ASAP.

Once you get the update, head to the comments section below and let us know how the update process went and how you’re finding Jelly Bean on your Galaxy S3.
