Earlier today, Google had their earnings call where they announced how well or not so well they did in the last quarter of 2012. Google’s CEO Larry Page was wrapping up his opening comments on the call, and noting that “managing our supply better” is a priority, Page was also hinting at some possible upcoming Motorola smartphone features. The two areas that Page said Motorola has been working on is better batteries and impact-resistant designs.
I am excited about the business. In today’s multi screen world, the opportunities are endless. Think about your device. Battery life is a huge issue. You shouldn’t have to worry about constantly recharging your phone. When you drop your phone, it shouldn’t go splat. Everything should be a ton faster and easier. There’s real potential to invent new and better experiences.
Page went on and spoke about Motorola’s new CEO Dennis Woodside and that he has built a “world-class team” that is currently exploring these new opportunities:
Our CEO at Motorola, Dennis, has built a world-class team, and they’re working on these opportunities. It’s still early days, but I am excited about the innovative way they’re approaching product development and the speed of their execution. And they recently signed an agreement to sell Motorola’s Home division for $2.35 billion.
So did Larry Page just out the X phone that Motorola and Google are working on? Possibly. But he didn’t say much more than what we already knew. We knew that Motorola was working on better batteries, just look at the Razr Maxx and Razr Maxx HD, and the impact-resistant designs we knew about as well. But what’s interesting is he didn’t say anything about the rumors of the X Phone. So it could really be coming soon, or it might not be. Only time will tell. But, I for one, really hope the X Phone is real and is coming this year.
