LG's Optimus G Finally Hits For A Million

LG has announced today through a Korean news outlet that sales of the LG Optimus G have hit the magical one million units sold mark. This comes just four months after the device’s initial release.

Although one million sounds like a lot, when you compare it to sales of other flagship phones like Samsung’s Galaxy S 3 with 41 million units sold since May, or Apple’s iPhone 5 with 2 million plus sold in it’s first weekend, it kind of puts things into perspective.

After seeing a limited release in just Korea back in September 2012, the phone hit US shores along with Japan and Canada shortly afterwards. Currently the device can be used on AT&T and Sprint here in the US. The company also has plans for a Chinese release as well as some European countries before Q1 2013 is over so we should expect to see a bump in those sales numbers very soon.

LG claims to have sold a total of 7 million smartphones  Q3 of 2012. They are also said to have plans on selling upwards of 45 million devices in 2013. Although that seems like a huge stretch considering that it took so long to hit one million with their current flagship device.

It can be argued that LG will see a jump in sales because they finally got a chance to be in the Nexus program. Samsung was just another decent handset maker with a boatload of consumer complaints before they got two Nexus phones in a row, that was when the company took off like a rocket. LG has fielded similar complaints but their Nexus offering is a work of art in my opinion. The Optimus G itself is a close cousin of the Nexus 4 and compares favorably to the Google and LG collaboration.
