Quick question, what’s the difference between the AT&T Nexus 7 3G and the T-Mobile Nexus 7 3G? Nothing, except the SIM card in the box. From the time the 3G variant of the Nexus 7 was announced back in late October, it was only available on Google Play as unlocked with an AT&T SIM card. Now that didn’t mean you were stuck with AT&T, because it was unlocked you could throw any SIM in there. But starting today, you can grab the 3G version with a T-Mobile SIM card.
So the T-Mobile Nexus 7 3G has all the same specs, but in case you forgot what they were. Here they are again:
- 7-inch 1280×800 resolution IPS Display
- 1.2GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor
- 1GB of RAM
- 1.2MP front-facing camera; no rear-facing camera
- 32GB internal storage; no SD card slot
- 4325mAh battery
- Android 4.2 – Jelly Bean (even though the Play Store lists Android 4.1, we know that Android 4.2 is available for it)
The T-Mobile Nexus 7 3G also sells for $299, identically priced to the AT&T one. Same 32GB of storage as well. So if you don’t want the $100 credit for signing a 2-year contract with AT&T for the Nexus 7, then hop on the T-Mobile bandwagon. They do have speedy HSPA+, faster than what AT&T offers. But T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 42mpbs is only available in some markets. So you’ll want to check that out before you pick one up. T-Mobile doesn’t offer unlimited data for the Nexus 7 3G or any other tablet (sad face), but they do offer 2GB, 5GB and 10GB packages, which instead of being charged overages, your data gets throttled to EDGE speeds instead. So it might not be the best, but at least you won’t get charged overages. T-Mobile also has what they call week pass and month passes, you can find out more information here.
So it’s not a huge deal, but it’s good that Google is offering the Nexus 7 3G with both AT&T and T-Mobile SIM cards. Who’s grabbing a Nexus 7 3G with a T-Mobile SIM card? Let us know in the comments below.
