The Nexus 7 dock first appeared on the Japanese ASUS site back in July of last year. At the time, it stealthily made its way to the masses with no further information from ASUS on a US release or price. More recently, we learned that the dock would be available in the US and Europe in late January, 2013.
It looks like that information is true as the Nexus dock is now shipping to US owners. Strangely enough, the only place currently offering the dock for sale is ExcaliberPC.com. It’s still listed at the previously estimated $39.99 price point so no surprise there. What will come as a surprise though, is the cost of shipping which is quite high.
To ship the dock in the US, the costs are as follows (of course, they may differ based on your current location):
- FedEx Ground -$10.88
- FedEx Express Saver- $16.88
- FedEx Two Day- $20.37
- FedEx Standard Overnight- $37.33
- FedEx Priority Overnight- $41.13
- FedEx Priority Overnight (Weekend delivery)- $56.13
- USPS Priority Mail for APO/FPO/PO Box- $13.73
I think you’ll agree when I say that those prices are relatively high. Hopefully, I’m not out of line when I say that I genuinely don’t like FedEx. Come to think of it, I’m actually not fond of any mailing or shipping service.
Regardless, for those attractive prices (sarcasm) you can get your hands on a fairly basic Nexus 7 dock. It features a MicroUSB charging port and a 3.5mm audio jack. What can you actually do with those ports you ask?
Well, besides anything a dirty mind can come up with, of course, you can listen to music through an external audio system while still charging the Nexus 7. In layman’s terms, this is a simple multimedia dock that’s been exclusively developed for Google’s premiere 7″ tablet.
The dock itself is manufactured with a polished glass exterior and includes a “durable” rubber grip to hold the Nexus in place. The Nexus 7 sits at a reasonable angle in the dock so that you can still use the device when it’s connected.
The Nexus 7 dock has also been spotted on B&H Photo’s website, at the same price ($39.99). Unfortunately, the availability date at B&H is January 18th so you’ll have to wait a couple more days for your dock to ship.
The ideal place for this dock to come available is the Google Play store. It doesn’t make sense for Google to overlook a peripheral that’s been designed specifically for its flagship tablet. Then again, stranger things have happened over the years.
