How long have we been waiting for the official Nexus 4 Wireless Charging Orb we saw Martias Duarte show off in the video of him introducing the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 10? So far about 2 months. As usual with Nexus devices, the accessories come out months later. In fact the Nexus 7 dock finally is available, but it overpriced. Hopefully we won’t have to wait that long for the Nexus 4 Wireless Charging Orb.
The official orb, which we still think Google grabbed their leftover Nexus Q’s and sliced them in half to make this accessory, showed up for pre-order on a Norwegian retailer. The retailer, Dustin Home, had it priced at 739 kr, which works out to about $114 USD with today’s exchange rate. Isn’t that kind of expensive? Well at least it should work on other devices that have wireless charging. The Nexus 4 uses the Qi wireless charging standard which is the same as the HTC Droid DNA, and the Nokia Lumia 920 (if you’re a Windows Phone 8 fan). So in theory you should be able to use this for other devices than just the Nexus 4. We’re hoping that when the Charging Orb finally hits the US that it won’t cost that much. But if it does, we don’t see Google selling to many of these.
Dustin Home also has an estimated ship date of February 12th. Hopefully that’s a worldwide launch and that it’ll be available on the Play Store on February 12th. Although that’s just speculation so don’t take our word for it. And if it ever does show up on the Play Store, good luck grabbing one before they sell out. We all remember the Nexus 4 ordering process, right? If you really want a wireless charging mat for the Nexus 4, there are many other alternatives on Amazon that will work. Remember the Nexus 4 will work with any Qi-compatible charging mat.
