Ouya Shipping to UK in March 2013, 3D Version in Production

Ouya, the Android OS based home gaming console, began shipping developer units in the U.S. at the end of December 2012. Now, UK users have a date to mark on their calendars, well a month at least. Ouya is planning to ship their consoles to the UK in April, but inside sources are claiming that things are in order for a March ship date instead. If this was meant to be a surprise for UK consumers you can just act surprised when it arrives.

Following a massive Kickstarter campaign that ended up gathering $8.6 million in crowd sourced funding, the developers are already talking about the next version of their console, and they’re talking about releasing it before the end of 2013. So where are they headed now? Just like every other digital medium they’re going to 3D content. The plan at this time is to produce an Ouya console capable of generating stereoscopic 3D content on compatible TV’s before the end of the year.

Not familiar with Ouya yet? Here’s the general background from the Ouya website:

OUYA was created in 2012 by Julie Uhrman, a video game industry veteran who saw an opportunity to open up the last closed game platform — the TV. Julie and an initial team of game developers and advisors brought the concept to life, with the help of Yves Behar and fuseproject, and took OUYA to Kickstarter in July of 2012. It became one of the most successful Kickstarter projects ever, with tens of thousands of backers pledging to help bring OUYA to life. OUYA’s first consoles will ship in early 2013.

U.S. sales of the Ouya console are currently an Amazon.com exclusive, but they’re still available for pre-order directly from the Ouya website. Currently the website lists the expected ship date for U.S. consumers as April 2013, but it’s highly likely that orders will go out in March for U.S. customers also since the U.K. models are expected to ship at that time. A pre-order on the web will cost you $109, and includes the console and one controller.

Are you excited for the full release of the Ouya console? Is a second generation in the same year simply too fast? Let us know!
