Philips just launched a new Android smartphone, as usual with Philips no specific name but just a model number for the device. The W8355 is quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy Grand which was announced last month. Both devices have rather large displays with low pixel densities and both support two SIM cards and they both run Android.
The specs for the Philips w8355 include:
- 5.3-inch 960×540 resolution display
- dual-core 1GHz processor
- 512MB of RAM
- 5MP rear camera
- Android 4.0.4 – Ice Cream Sandwich
And to put in perspective, here are the specs of the Samsung Galaxy Grand:
- 5-inch 800×480 resolution display
- dual-core 1.2GHz processor
- 1GB of RAM
- 8MP rear camera
- Android 4.1.2 – Jelly Bean
So there are some slight differences between the two devices. The biggest differences are the displays and cameras, for the average consumer. Although for us we notice everything is difference. Another difference between the two will probably be the price. I suspect that the Philips W8355 will be cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Grand. According to the Bluetooth SIG, it looks like the Philips W8355 will be available globally, but we’ll have to wait to see where else its heading.
More than likely the Philips W8355 will be offered primarily in Asia. Since that’s where the dual-SIM phones are very popular. Especially in India and China. Here in the US, if you tell someone you have a dual-SIM phone, they’ll look at you like your crazy. That just doesn’t exist over here. Even offering a device just for China, it should still be a good seller. Since there are a ton of people living in China. In fact it’s where the most Android phones are sold. And it being a cheaper device, it could do pretty well. We’ll be sure to let you know if this device heads to any other markets any time soon.
So who’d be interested in this dual-SIM Android smartphone from Philips? Let us know in the comments below if you are.
