Take a second to look at the above picture and I mean really LOOK at it. You’re either thinking that it’s a child’s hand holding a normal sized phone or a normal sized hand holding a ludicrously giant phone. If you guessed the latter then according to Chinese-language Digi-wo forum you are correct. Seriously that is apparently the front of a Sony device with a monstrous 6.44 inch 1080p screen.
Now I’m all for larger devices when it fits a particular need, for instance there is a market for Samsung’s Note series and clearly The HTC Droid DNA is a hot phone, but lately we’ve been teetering on the border of madness.
Phablet originally meant a 5 inch screen, but now that (or close to it) is starting to become the standard for normal smartphones. That’s where where the Note II picked up with it’s 5.55 inch front. Still not too bad you say? How about the Huawei Ascend Mate?
Huawei’s Ascend Mate clocks in at 6.1 inches. Who in their right mind want’s a phone that big? Apparently the ad wizards over at Sony think there is a market for something even bigger. Well I’m sorry but I’m just not buying it. It’s too much screen to pocket comfortably. I wear baggy jeans. Not so baggy that their hanging off my ass, but baggy enough to fit normal things in the pockets and something like this would just be uncomfortable. I’d need a giant belt clip with a holster to carry this thing around and to be honest belt clips look stupid with a regular sized phone.
Of course, there are going to be people who say that they can’t afford two devices and to them I call shenanigans. Unlocked, one of these “phones” will cost you between $500 and $600. That’s enough for a Nexus 4 and a Nexus 7 with money to spare depending on which storage options you pick. On top of that having separate dedicated devices allows you to optimize your apps depending on which device they work better on. That way you’re not trying to shoehorn things on a screen that’s just not quite right.
Maybe I’m wrong so I’ll put this query out to you, the readers. Are you interested in a phone this big? I can’t believe I’m in the minority here so please prove me wrong.
