Sony "HuaShan" to Become Sony Xperia SP, Xperia L Revealed as Well

There are 26 letters in the English Alphabet so, you would think that if Sony are going to name their phones with letters, that they would use as many as possible, right? Wrong. Sony are content to use the letter “S” once more, because using it in the Xperia Arc S and the Xperia S wasn’t enough, we’re soon going to have the Xperia S…P. I get the simplistic nature of Sony’s naming here, and I much prefer it to the smartphone naming we’ve had from Samsung and HTC in the past, “Fascinate” anyone? Nevertheless, Sony are back with more smartphones for 2013 and it looks like we’re getting some more info on their more middling options.

The Xperia SP is something that’s come in Android news already but, we have a little more info on it now. The Xperia SP, which has been known as the “HuaShan” or the C530x – I’d rather one of those than another “S” – will pack a resolution of 1280 x 720 but, there’s no need on screen size. Personally, I’m hopng for 4.5″ as it’d result in a sharp display without added size. Processor wise, there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core running at 1.7 Ghz with the improved Adreno 320 GPU in tow. We could see something of the Xperia SP at MWC and we’re expecting Sony to position this as a budget-friendly version of the Xperia Z and ZL.

As for the Xperia L – hey look, a new letter! – which has been known as the C210X until now, is packing a more modest resolution of 854 x 480, which suggests a size around 4 – 4.3-inches. A dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus and 1GB of RAM are here as well. Both the Xperia SP and the Xperia L will be shipping with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and presumably the same sort of skin that features in the Xperia Z and ZL.

Sony’s naming scheme seems to be getting more and more confusing but, it is good to see them releasing phones for both the low-end and the mid-range of the market, after all we can’t all afford pricey smartphones. Not only that but, a lot of us just don’t want a bigger phone. I’m hoping the Xperia SP comes with a 4.5-inch 720p display, to offer decent pixel density without the size to go along with it.
