As is always the case with new devices, the rumor mill barely stops to slow down before it hits full speed again concerning a new device. This time around there are leaked details of an upcoming tablet from Sony, speculatively called the Xperia Tablet Z which, would make a lot of sense as last year’s tab from them was called the Xperia Tablet S. So, what sort of specs and what sort of device are we looking at? Read on to find out.
The tablet is said to be IP55 and IP57 dust and water-resistant, just like its smartphone cousin, the Xperia Z that was announced at CES, to much fanfare. Sony are all about “one Sony” these days and it’d be a great idea for them to bring their tablet line together with their smartphone line, instead of having yet another product line to flounder. We all like numbers when it comes down to devices so, let’s run down the leaked specs:
- 10.1″ Full HD Touchscreen (1920 x 1080)
- 1.5 Ghz Quad-Core Snapdragon S4 Processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 32GB of storage
- 8MP rear-facing camera, 2MP front-facing camera
- NFC, LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0
- 6,000 mAh battery
- It’s all just 6.9 mm thick
That last sentence might have caught your eye, and for good reason, for Sony to be able to pack all of this into a 6.9mm thick frame is pretty awesome and if this figure is real, then Sony will have a real-marketing ploy on their hands. As well as the thinness of this device, it’s said to be heavily based on the Xperia Z smartphone, which should help Sony as their latest smartphone seems to garnering some very positive attention, indeed.
There’s nothing official just yet and all of the above has been reported by Xperia Info on Twitter. There’s a chance that this could all be untrue rumors but, I honestly think this is a strategy that Sony should and are going to go with. The Xperia Tablet S was a good tablet but in a world of Full HD and Nexus 10 displays it got buried pretty quickly. Hopefully, this time around there is some better marketing from Sony and the manufacturing issues that plague the Tablet S don’t happen again. Besides that, Sony will have to think very carefully on pricing, too high and they risk being overlooked, after all the Nexus 7 is out there at just $199 and the Nexus 10 – which a much better resolution – at $399.
