Sprint Pushing Android 4.2.1 to the Galaxy Nexus; Hey Verizon, When Is Your Galaxy Nexus Getting Updated?

Guess what Galaxy Nexus owners on Sprint? Android 4.2.1 is on its way. Yes, Android 4.2.1 – Build GA02, is finally making its way to Sprint Galaxy Nexus (Toroplus) devices via OTA. A couple of weeks ago we saw this update file hit Google’s servers, so many people may already have the update. But if not, you should be able to spam your update button to get it. The update does include all the awesome Android 4.2 features like Photosphere, Daydream, lockscreen widgets and much more.

This is coming about two and a half months after Android 4.2 was initially launched, which is right on schedule for Sprint. With Android 4.1 – Jelly Bean they pushed it out to the Galaxy Nexus about two to two and a half months after release. You can go ahead and follow the directions below to pull down the update:

  • Go into Settings
  • Tap on ‘About Phone’
  • Tap on ‘Check for Updates’

But this leads us to wonder where’s Verizon’s update for their Galaxy Nexus? Last week, Verizon officially stopped selling the Galaxy Nexus and put it on the “End of Life” list, which means it will probably never get another official update from Verizon. Which sucks, but that’s the life of a smartphone, and the life of a Verizon smartphone. Luckily we’ve got the developer community out there to help us get some Android 4.2 goodness.

Samsung is doing something rather awesome with this update as well. They are providing source code for the newest kernel for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus today. Which means we should see some nice custom kernels for Android 4.2 on the Toroplus pretty soon. I think the saying goes, it’s better late than never? Well that’s the case with the Galaxy Nexus on both Sprint and Verizon.

Has anyone grabbed the update from Sprint yet for their Galaxy Nexus? If you get your hands on the update, be sure to leave a comment below and let us know how you’re liking or disliking the update  to your Galaxy Nexus.
