It sure seems like more and more companies are trying to get into the high end phone business these days. Namely, Sony and Huawei have picked up their game, but apparently they’re not the only ones planning new ventures. Alcatel just announced the One Touch Idol X, which is clearly an opportunity for them to try their hand at the high end market.
Aside from the unusual and somewhat confusing name, the One Touch Idol X is a 5-inch Android 4.2 smartphone equipped with a 1080p HD display. Interestingly enough, it also happens to be the first phone running Android 4.2 other than the Nexus branded devices.
Just from looking at the press images it seems the Idol X will be running a stock version of Android. This could easily be an incorrect assumption, but let’s hope it’s not. You can never go wrong with stock Android.
As for the rest of the Idol X specs and features, here is the complete list:
- Full 1080p HD display
- 1.2GHz quad-core processor
- 16GB of internal storage with MicroSD expansion slot
- 13 megapixel rear facing camera
- 2,000 mAh battery
When it launches the Idol X will be available in several different colors, which is certainly an option we haven’t seen much, outside of the Nokia and HTC devices.
For such a large device, the Idol X is actually quite thin too, sizing in at 7.1mm.
One particularly distressing thing to note, the Idol X is that there’s no mention of an LTE radio. For some folks, that will probably be a deal break. It also likely means that the Idol X is going to be internationally available as most foreign networks lack LTE support. The Idol X may not even see a US release, but we’ll know soon.
The Verge reported that a press photo from Alcatel mentions an 8 megapixel camera, instead of the 13 megapixel that’s mentioned in the press release. Currently, we’re not quite sure what camera sensor is accurate, but I’m sure we’ll find out over the coming week. MWC is kicking off tomorrow, and it’s the premiere mobile industry event, all the leading names will be unveiling their upcoming products.
As soon as we have more information about the Idol X, we’ll let you know.
