Android How To: Get Started with the Messaging App

One of the main things people do on their new phone is send a text message. Now if you’re coming from an iPhone, Blackberry or even a flip phone, you may have a bit of trouble with the messaging app on Android. That’s where this guide comes into play. The messaging app that comes with Android is very beautiful and intuitive, and here’s how we use it.

Composing a New Text Message

1. Tap on the  in the bottom left corner as shown in the screenshot below.

2. Type the recipients name in the “To:” box at the top.

3. Next, type the message you want to send.

4. Tap Send.

Attaching Pictures, Videos and Audio to a Text Message

1. In the message screen, tap on the paperclip in the top right corner.

2. Select the type of media you’d like to attach

3. Browse to where the media is on your device.

4. Tap Send.

Receiving Messages

  • You’ll receive a notification in the status bar at the top, just pull down your notifications and click on the message to reply.

Group Texting

  • You can send Texts to a group of people all at once. Follow the directions for composing a text message above, and add as many people as you want.
  • You can also send texts to people’s gmail address.

Other Settings

  • Change Text Message Limit: Messaging > Settings > Delete Old Messages UNCHECK
  • Enable delivery reports: Messaging > Settings > Delivery reports CHECK
  • Disable Group Messaging: Messaging > Settings > Group Messaging UNCHECK
  • Change Notifications for Messages: Messaging > Settings > Notifications
  • Search for Text Messages: Messaging > Magnifying glass (in the bottom right-hand corner
  • Delete all Threads: Messaging > Menu > Delete all Threads

That’s how you use the default messaging app on Android. Now there are some other third-party apps you can use, like Handcent and GoSMS, and they work similar to the default app but with a few more bells and whistles. If there’s anything else we missed, please feel free to leave a comment below.
