Finally, after nearly a year of waiting. The first public release of Carbon for Android is available. No, we aren’t talking about the Carbon App that Koush developed, this is the very popular WebOS Twitter app that is now on Android. We’ve seen delay after delay after delay for Carbon, and until last week the project was dead. The developers tweeted last week that they are working on it, and sent out a Release Candidate to their testers, and finished some bugs, and today we finally have Carbon.
I downloaded Carbon when it first hit the Play Store a few hours ago. It’s actually quite nice, although it is missing a few features that most power users are going to miss. But it is right up there with Falcon Pro, which has been taking over the Twitter scene lately. Carbon also can only refresh mentions and messages once every 15 minutes. Now that, I’m pretty sure is due to Twitter’s new API rules that are going into affect pretty soon. But it still kinda sucks. It also supports multiple accounts, so those looking for that, Carbon has it.
Remember Carbon is only for Android 4.0 and higher. It also does use expanded notifications that was introduced in Android 4.1 – Jelly Bean. The animations in Carbon are really well designed and look awesome. It’s also important to note that Carbon does not yet support tablets. It’s not one of those things where it’ll give you the phone layout on your Nexus 7 or Nexus 10, it’ll allow you to download the app, then when you go to open it it’ll tell you that it’s not compatible. Hopefully that feature will come very soon to Carbon.
It’s very clean and slick, and like I said before it brings Project Butter to a whole new level. Personally, it’ll probably become my daily Twitter app on my phone. What about you? Are you going to try out Dots and Lines new Twitter app that is finally available? Let us know in the comments below how you like or dislike it.
