If you’re active on Google+ you’ve probably already heard of this new app. But just in case, here it is. DashClock is a brand new widget for devices running Android 4.2 and above. The reason why it’s only for Android 4.2 is because it’s a lock screen widget, which is a new feature in Android 4.2. DashClock allows you to add some extensions like:
- Current Weather
- Missed Calls
- Unread Text Messages
- Next Calendar Appointments
- Unread Gmail messages
- Next Scheduled alarm
There’s also something else in here that will make you happy. This app is open sourced. Which means developers can add even more extensions. Now this is going to get interesting, to see what kind of extensions we see pop up in the Play Store for DashClock. I’d expect to see some Twitter and Facebook extensions soon.
To add the widget to your lock screen, you just add it like any other lock screen widget. Which we did a guide not to long ago as to how you can add widgets to your lock screen. It’s been available on Google Play for a little over 12 hours now, it has 275 5-star ratings already, with an average rating of 4.8 stars. So not to bad.
This does replace the default clock widget on your lock screen. I’ve actually just installed it, and so far I really like it. For me it’s a bit to early to tell if its stable or not. But if you’re running Android 4.2, you’ll definitely want to give this one a try. It is a free app and a very small one of course since its just a widget.
For developers you can head over to the open source project here and learn more about making extensions for DashClock. I don’t know about all of you, but I’m definitely interested to see what kind of extensions developers come up with for this.
