Did you watch HTC’s big press event that announced the HTC One? Of course not. HTC didn’t live stream the event, so the best any of us normals could do was to watch a live blog from someone who was actually there. The crack HTC marketing team strikes again. Reaching out to the press with a big event in London is a great idea. But reaching out to the people who might actually purchase the device you are announcing is a much better idea. While the HTC One certainly has a lot to offer, it is much too soon to know if the device is going to help HTC get one step closer to profitability. But at least the people over at HTC have released two videos for your viewing pleasure. The first is the full coverage of the London event. It’s about 37 min long, so unless you are trying to kill some time, I would recommend the second video. It’s a 4.5 min summary of the event that includes some great shots of those inexplicable dancers in the middle of the demo area.
It is great to see that HTC has released these videos just 24 hours after the event itself. But clearly HTC missed the boat in a big way when it comes to this event. There aren’t a lot of them, but there are a few HTC faithful out there that would have sat and watched a 45 min event live stream in its entirety. This is an opportunity for HTC to show the world that it is moving into a new area of not just high-quality devices, but clear and aggressive marketing. But failing to live-stream this event is a huge misstep for HTC. Hopefully the HTC One turns out to be as amazing as yesterday’s presentation indicated it might be, and HTC can once again be competitive in the smart phone market. But if the HTC One doesn’t get any traction, failing to show its launch event to the world might be part of the reason why. Time will tell.
