We’ve been hearing a lot about Huawei’s upcoming Ascend P2, which is the last piece to their puzzle that is their smartphone line-up of 2013. The Chinese manufacturer has chosen MWC – which hasn’t even official started yet – to show off their latest – and thinnest – smartphone. The Ascend P2 isn’t going to win any awards for being one of the fastest smartphones in the world but, it looks like it’s going to be one of the thinnest smartphone we’re going to see at MWC. There’s a glossy backing to the insanely light phone that comes in a choice of black or white. Not only is this the thinnest smartphone available but, it’ll also support 150mbps speeds over LTE – which is any network running on Cat 4 LTE – that’s faster than anything else out there right now. Engadget managed to spend some quality time with the device in Barcelona.
Take a look at the specs for the Ascend P2 below:
- 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 LCD Display with 315 PPI
- Quad-Core 1.5 Ghz CPU
- 8.4mm thick
- 13MP rear-facing camera
- 1GB of RAM
- 16GB of Storage
- Android 4.1.2 with Huawei’s “Emotion UI”
- 2,420 mAh Battery
This latest from Huawei is by no means a slouch and should be able to hold its own against a lot of the big boys already out on shelves. It is, however, a shame about having just 1GB of RAM, which pales in comparison to recent releases from HTC and Samsung. The Ascend P2 will use less power and features 2 amp charging that allows it to charge faster than other handsets do.
If it looks familiar to you, that’s because it’s based very closely on its predecessor. There’s the usual array of buttons and ports, the right side of the phone sees the power button and a dedicated camera button as well as what looks like a microSD Card slot. The left side of the device has the volume rocker and the top of the phone houses the headphone socket and microUSB port. Huawei’s branding is being broken up as follows: P for style and fashion, G for outstanding value, D for bleeding-edge tech and Y for accessibility So, that makes the Ascend P2 one fashionable phone, right? Well, it does feature Huawei’s “Magic Touch” so you can use it with a pair of gloves if you like.
As with anything from Huawei, there’s no word on pricing or availability in the US, it’s launching in Europe for €399 in Q2 and is listed as launching “globally” but, who know what Huawei mean by “global”. When asked about availability in the US by Engadget, Huawei had this to say “You want the P2 in the US, but it online”. Great way to build a brand in the biggest smartphone market on the planet, Huawei.
