What’s one of the popular things in the PC market that isn’t in the smartphone market? Build-your-own devices. Whenever you go to Dell, Apple, or HP’s websites you can custom build your next desktop or laptop. So how’d you like to do that for your next smartphone? Well it looks like that’s what HTC is planning to do in China.
According to NetEase, the Taiwanese manufacturer is experiencing some poor performance in China and plans to address these concerns by offering some new customization options to consumers. The president of HTC China, Ren Weiguang, says that the program is not yet in place, but plans have been started to offer these customization features in HTC’s own e-commerce stores. What this will mean is that buyers can choose their own hardware configurations, applications, services and accessories when purchasing their device.
Their VP of Product Marketing, Lin Zurong is saying that the company is still undertaking a feasibility study to determine whether giving a variety of choices to their customers would make sense in the market. Their aim here is to provide a “different purchase experience” for their customers, or what few they have left. HTC is noting that this comes with many difficulties, as expected. A custom phone would certainly cost more than most phones and viability would depend on whether this business model can scale or not. I do think it’s a great idea though, and it’s probably the most interesting Android news we’ve heard in a while.
If you could go to HTC’s website, and pick out your Droid DNA, and choose your carrier, processor, RAM, screen size and resolution, storage capacity, and battery size, would HTC gain you back as a customer? They certainly would have me back. That’s like picking out your dream smartphone. We already know that HTC makes some good looking devices and they are high-quality as well. It is awesome that HTC is looking to try something new. But the question is can we choose between stock Android and Sense?
