Today, we started seeing some leaks of screenshots for what appears to be Samsung’s smartwatch that was rumored earlier this week to be announced and released at the same time as the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 mini. The images shown above are being called the Samsung Galaxy Altius, and judging by the size, it looks to be from a smartwatch and not a phone or tablet.
These images appeared on a Korean messageboard which has a conversation going about smartwatches and whether they would take off or not. So far, no one appears to be denying that this device does indeed exist, but instead are talking about how it will compete with the rumored iWatch and other smartwatches like the Pebble which we saw at CES this year.
We’ve also seen multiple rumors pointing to the codename “Altius” for the Galaxy S4 smartphone, which has been a big topic on the rumor mill lately. These series of screenshots are not 4.99-inch 1080p screenshots which is what the Galaxy S4 screenshots should look like. Instead they are 500×500 squares, which would seem plausible for a smartwatch, right?
In the screenshots, there are also mentions of SKT for SKTelecom, so that could be where the rumors of a smartphone got mixed up, but this also gives credit to the idea that this smartwatch will have data connections. Since that is a carrier in South Korea, which is of course Samsung’s homeland. There is also a “AltiusOS” being listed, so it’s quite possible that this being Java-based, with an Android look and feel.
So, all signs are pointing towards a smartwatch coming from Samsung soon. But will we see it unveiled with the Galaxy S4? Possibly. It could end up waiting until later this year. But I’d rather see it launch with the Galaxy S4, so when you buy a brand new shiny Galaxy S4, you get your Galaxy Altius smartwatch with it. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
