Sony has been making headway in the news recently thanks to the Xperia Z, their latest entry and noble attempt at providing a high-end device. Despite garnering quite a bit of buzz, the Xperia Z has no international release date yet. Most companies would be satisfied biding their time, and waiting for the release of their latest device, but apparently Sony is doing just the opposite.
A new rumor is floating around that Sony is actually working on their next flagship device. If the rumor is true, then Sony is certainly doing a good job at preparing for the future.
Supposedly an “unrecognized device” with the model number C6802 has cropped up in a recent HTML5 test. An anonymous source apparently captured an image of the test results and sent them on over to Xperia Blog. It’s not entirely clear whether or not the picture is authentic, but it’s still a fascinating story nonetheless. The image could have easily been edited by someone.
For comparison, the Xperia Z has a model number of C660X, so this unknown device will probably be outfitted with higher-end specs. The same could be said regardless of model number, considering the device would be launched at a much later date. The Xperia Z is outfitted with a quad-core Qualcomm processor, 2GB of RAM and an Adreno GPU so the undisclosed version will probably be packing something of equal or greater power.
It’s possible this device may even be an entry level version for a new flagship series. For example, this may be a 3G only version of a certain device, whereas a 4G version will launch later.
The photo does reveal some specs, none of which are too telling. For example, there’s no indication of processing power or internal RAM capacity so we’ll have to wait for that information to come later. The HTML5 test does reveal that the C6802, whatever it may be, is packing a 1920 x 1080 resolution display, and it’s running the latest version of Android (4.2 Jelly Bean). What we can gather from this information, when the model number is also taken into account, is that it’s in a very-early phase of testing.
There’s also no way to determine whether or not this new device will share the same dust and water proof certifications as the Xperia Z. Sony probably will still continue with the high durability features, if only because that seems to be the new staple of their products. After all, just how many images have you seen lately that portrays some kind of liquid being poured on the Z? I know that I’ve seen quite a few.
Despite the question of authenticity, it makes sense that Sony would be working on another device, or perhaps more, for release later this year. The Xperia Z is probably going to drop soon, but it’s not going to carry the company through the entire year. Especially with the recent news that the Tegra 4, Exynos Octa and Snapdragon 600 and 800 chips will be releasing commercially soon. It’s likely that Sony is going to want in on that action, so expect more news about an updated device.
Obviously when more information is available, we’ll let you know about it as soon as possible.
So, what do you think? Anyone think this picture is photoshopped? Who thinks it’s genuine?
