Last week, we learned that Google was in talks with record labels to launch a subscription music streaming service. Now there’s a new report coming out of Bloombergthat “two people with knowledge of the situation” that Google is indeed working on a streaming music service. According to Bloomberg, Google is planning on launching this service in Q3 this year, and they are already in talks with record labels:
Negotiations are under way with major record labels to license their music, said the people, who sought anonymity because the talks are confidential. Google, which also owns the YouTube video website, is also discussing renewing deals that cover the use of songs in videos made by consumers, they said.
The report from Bloomberg also says that the service would work on Android and other devices running other OS’. Which at this point that means iOS in addition to Android. But with all these other mobile operating systems emerging this year, we may see Google Music available on Tizen, Firefox OS, Ubuntu Touch and a few of the others. But that’s a whole other topic.
So a Google Music streaming service. How many of you would love to have this type of service for Android and Google Music? I know I’d love to have streaming music like Pandora or Spotify in addition to what Google Music already does. It would mean one less app I’d have to keep on my phone and/or tablet. The other thing is what would subscriptions look like for a streaming music service for Google Music? I’d hope there’d be a free plan along with a relatively cheap plan to compete with their competitors. Which Google shouldn’t have to much of a hard time competing with the likes of iHeart Radio, Pandora and Spotify.
