Typically Google doesn’t reveal sales figures of the Nexus line. But that never stops people from speculating and trying to figure out how many devices they actually sold. Mobile industry Analyst, Benedict Evans did some number crunching from the numbers that ASUS had given out. ASUS is the manufacturer behind the Nexus 7. It looks like Google sold around 4.5-4.6 million units of the Nexus 7. Now that’s really not all that bad, especially for Google’s first tablet, and all the issues they had with pre-orders and there only being 8GB and 16GB versions for most of the time it was available.
These estimates came from tablet sales reported by ASUS and various statements from the company’s CEO. Now almost 5 million tablets sold is a pretty respectable number, especially for the first tablet of a new line, that’s a lot of early adopters. It still fell short to the almight Kindle Fire and iPad Mini. It’s actually pretty surprising that it fell to the iPad mini because that device is brand new and was only out for a couple of months in 2012. While the Nexus 7 came out in July, and had close to 6 months to beat out Apple’s iPad mini. But it’s easy to see why the Kindle Fire beat it. Amazon had the Kindle Fire out in the Fall of 2011, which means it had the full 12 months in 2012 to get the upper edge on Google and Apple. Along with the same price or lower, depending on which generation of the device you bought. The Kindle Fire had some brand recognition behind it as well, most people know about the Kindle as an e-reader. So when they hear “Kindle Fire” they automatically think, that’s a quality device.
There are rumors of a new Nexus 7 coming at Google I/O, and I can’t see why it wouldn’t come at Google I/O in May. But it’ll be interesting to see how 2013 stacks up for the Nexus, Kindle Fire and iPad Mini. Do you own any of these tablets? Let us know in the comments below.
