Chromebooks have been in the news a lot lately. Last week, HP announced their entrance into the Chromebook game with the HP Pavilion Chromebook. Yesterday, a video surfaced on YouTube showing off a touch screen Chromebook with a 2560×1700 resolution. Now a new Chromebook has surfaced, this one is code named “Puppy” and is said to feature NVIDIA’s new Tegra 4 processor.
The Tegra 4 processor features 4 ARM Cortex A-15 processors, along with 72 graphic cores. It also LTE embedded on the chip, along with better camera functionality. But that doesn’t mean we’ll see a Chromebook with LTE or a nice camera on it. Although it would be really nice to see that.
For those that aren’t familiar with Chromebooks or Chrome OS. This is Google’s desktop Operating System that is completely cloud-based and basically just a browser. Which is why its called Chrome OS. So far we’ve seen Chromebooks come from HP, Acer, Samsung, and Lenovo. With HP and Lenovo just joining the Chrome OS side of things within the past month or so. It’s great to see more manufacturers betting on Chrome OS. And even better to see more processor makers getting their chips in Chromebooks. We already have Samsung’s Exynos 5250 processor in the Samsung Chromebook. The Exynos 5250 is a dual-core ARM-based processor. Now there are a few disadvantages to having a ARM-based processor in a Chromebook. The biggest one being no Netflix support.
Now that we are seeing more Chromebooks coming with ARM-based chips, that’s if this Chromebook is indeed real, we should see more support for ARM-based Chromebooks from the Chrome team. Which is something we desperately need. I’m expecting that if this Tegra 4-based Chromebook is real, that it’s an ASUS built and manufactured Chromebook. Since ASUS is a big supporter of the Tegra chips, and have put them in just about every high-end tablet they’ve made.
Now remember this is just a rumor, and could be completely false. So we are urging you to take this with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, would you buy a Tegra 4 Chromebook? I know I’d definitely give it some thought. But I really like my Samsung Chromebook. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
