The Sony Xperia Z is a huge success in France as it seems, being sold out in under a day. The phone was sold through Sony’s french online store. If you were planning to buy the phone and you live in France, don’t worry, the phone is said to be back in stock next week.
Even though the phone has a price tag of €649 (or around $860), it didn’t seem to count for the people eager to get their hands on the Full HD Sony flagship. The amount of handsets stocked for the french launch is not known, but Sony Mobile France said it was significant.
The device will be available on the German market starting today, but only through an exclusive launch in the Sony store in Berlin. The phone is also available in the UK as a pre-order through Sony’s site.
The device was also successful in Japan, where DoCoMo (one of Japan’s largest operators) told the press that the phone had a good start, the carrier selling 140,000 devices since launch.
If you read up until now and still don’t understand what’s all the fuss about this handset, here are the specs for the phone:
- 146 grams (or 5.15 oz)
- 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064+MDM9215M Quad Core
- Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
- 13 megapixel Exmor RS camera with Auto focus and flash
- 2 MP, Exmor R, front facing camera (1080p)
- 5.0 inches TFT Full HD 1080p panel
- 2,330 mAh battery with talk time up to 11 hours and standby time up to 550 hours
- 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm (5.47 x 2.80 x 0.31 inch)
The phone was the second phone to support a Full HD display panel (after HTC’s DNA/Butterfly), but it was the first 1080p phone to be launched in Europe (which would explain the interest).Besides the top-notch specs, the phone is a beautiful device with a tough glass fiber polyamide chassis and a resistant tempered glass front and back panels with anti-shatter film. Here is the video presentation that Sony made for the phone’s design.

Oh, and besides that, the phone is water-proof up to a meter, resistant to water jets and it is also resistant to dust.
If you are like me, you are now probably imagining watching 1080p Youtube videos underwater, with water-resistant headphones on, of course.
Just as an added bonus, here’s a 5 minute video showing the Sony Xperia Z being assembled (In the lower left screen).
