Last month at CES in Las Vegas, NVIDIA announced the Tegra 4. Which was a huge upgrade from the Tegra 3. It includes 72 GPU cores, 4 Cortex A15 CPU cores, along with 4G LTE on board. So who’s the first manufacturer to bring a device with Tegra 4 processor to market? Well it’s none other than ZTE. As you know, ZTE and Huawei are desperately trying to make a splash in the US market. And depending on how good this “superphone” is and when/if it comes to the US, it could really help ZTE out with the US market share. But according to NVIDIA’s press release, it looks like this ZTE device will be a Chinese exclusive. Which is pretty unfortunate.
So far we don’t know any specs about this ZTE phone. But you can be rest assured that it’ll be some high-end specs. Since the Tegra 4 is a high-end processor, I’d be very surprised if ZTE put this in a low-end or mid-range phone. According to the press release, it looks like this won’t be just one phone. But that ZTE is working on a family of phones with varying specs. Especially like what ZTE did with the Tegra 3 chip last year.
But this won’t be the first device with the Tegra 4, but more than likely the first one available. You may remember back at CES that Vizio showed off a Tegra 4-powered tablet that is supposedly going to be on sale for around $399 which is the price of the Nexus 10. However, who knows if that will ever make it to the US as well. Nevertheless this is pretty exciting, even though it is ZTE. It’ll be interesting to see what other manufacturers will be using Tegra 4 in their new devices soon.
Anyone getting excited for a Tegra 4 device? Or are you waiting for a Snapdragon 600, 800 or Exynos 5 Octa device? Either way it’s time to get excited. Let us know in the comments below.
