I think it’s safe to say that MWC, like CES, was kind of a bust this year. Sure there was some exciting stuff, but most of what we saw was lacking a certain “wow” factor. Several companies, including Acer, had a diminished appearance at the events this year.
While Acer did show off a few of their devices in this year’s lineup, we truly didn’t get too much information from them. They showed off the Acer Liquid E1 and the Liquid Z2, and budget friendly Iconia B1, but a real flagship tablet was nowhere to be seen. According to sources, this is likely because Acer is looking to make a move into the phablet category.
In a recent interview for the Mobile World Daily, the president of Acer’s Smartphone Business hinted about a new phablet which is currently in the works.
Unfortunately, even though the new phablet was unofficially revealed, no additional information was given. You can see an excerpt from the original piece below.
What we do know, is that their next device will be called the Acer Liquid S, and will probably be a 5-inch sized device. 5-inch screens are something of the norm lately. Even though, a 4.7-inch device was mentioned above, phablets are commonly seen in a much larger size.
The Acer Liquid S will also be powered by an unnamed quad-core processor.
Acer certainly has some fabulous design ideas when it comes to their previous tablets, so I’m hoping the Liquid S will look just as appealing. The Google Nexus 7, for example, has an unusually minimal yet still quite handsome form factor.
Seeing as Acer has yet to officially announced the Liquid S, along with any utilized hardware the sky is pretty much the limit here. I’m sure back in the Acer labs they already have a prototype cooked up and running, but development devices rarely provide a realistic example of the commercial release.
I’m curious to know if any of you are excited by this news? Acer is certainly a laudable manufacturer in the tablet world, but there are lots of others out there. Is there another tablet (or phablet) that you’ll be keeping your eyes on?
