As of this morning the official Ingress Google+ pages informed the world that all level 6-8 players have been given one invite each. Ingress, for those of you who aren’t in the know, is the newest project from Google’s Niantic Labs. This augmented reality game has a complex back story but a relatively straightforward experience. Any Android tablet or phone can run the Ingress application. Once you are signed up you can collect glowing orbs of energy, and then use it to conquer portals and link them together. For a more detailed view of the game click here . I would also suggest following Niantic and Ingress on Google+. You can also check out the Niantic Project page to get a basic understanding of the fairly complex lore that surrounds the game. The video below also confirms the existence of an Ingress ebook series that will be released in the near future.
There has been a lot of talk/complaint about the slow roll out of Ingress. The game has been in closed beta for almost six months now, and it appears that many people who were excited when the game was released lost their enthusiasm when they were unable to secure an invite quickly. It is certainly frustrating to be able to learn about a game, but not be able to play it. But keep in mind that Ingress is essentially a massive global MMORPG. And that the Ingress application, even after all this time, still has occasional functionality issues. There have been massive improvements since the release of the most recent version of the app, but there are still widely reported issues with location tracking.
No on likes to be on the outside looking in. But if you still don’t have an invite, don’t lose hope. With the slow trickle of invites slowly becoming a steady stream, it looks like your wait will soon be over.
