John Legere, CEO of T-Mobile has some pretty neat ideas, I’ll give him that much. Lately, he’s been kicking around the notion of creating an “Anytime Upgrade” club which would allow gadget enthusiasts to upgrade as much as twice a year. It’s actually one idea of many that Legere has been speaking out loud about.
“Today is laying a foundation that’s going to allow us to innovate in ways that our competitors, with their older style business models, just aren’t able to do. We’re going to innovate in this space. This model will allow us to do that.”
Legere is referring to T-Mobile’s recent break away from the traditional two-year contract plans. Hopefully by now, you already know all about their new and improved ‘Uncarrier’ image.
The good news is that, for a “very small” membership fee, you would be able to join an exclusive club eligible for upgrades at a max of twice per year. At this point, it’s not clear whether or not that small fee would be an annual or monthly payment. Legere did mention that club members would also get insurance on their devices as part of the plan.
I’m willing to bet we’ve all had that inkling to upgrade our device before a contract was up. It seems silly to be locked in to something for two years, when phones are outdated after a year. This plan would be a fantastic opportunity for many of us to get our hands on a new flagship as it releases. After all, having the option to upgrade twice a year is a pretty awesome deal.
Unfortunately, at this time it’s just an idea and nothing is set in stone. Legere was mostly having a public brainstorming session.
With the adoption of T-Mobile’s new service plans, it’s unquestionably more plausible now than ever that something like this will come about. At the end of the day though, the old saying holds true- don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
Expecting an exclusive club like this to come about would certainly be counting some nonexistent chickens.
