At Mobile World Congress this year, LG announced their new LII series of smartphones, devices that would come with less-than-stellar specs for all to be able to afford. It looks like the L5II is about to go on a world tour and launch across the globe, starting with Brazil. The device isn’t necessarily what you’d call an “attractive buy” for many Android fans but for those on a budget, there’s a lot worse out there.
Here are the “headlining” specs for the L5II:
- 1 Ghz single-core CPU
- 4-inch 800 x 480 display
- 512MB of RAM
- Android 4.1.2
- 5MP rear-facing camera with flash
- 1,700 mAh battery
LG are announcing the device to launch in Brazil with a dual-SIM variant and then launch in the following countries from there: South and Central America, Asia, Russia, Middle East and Africa. There’s no word of it coming to the states, and with specs like that, there’s no wonder. After all, which carrier would want to have a device like this in their line-up?
These sorts of devices aren’t going to rack in too many buyers but, there’s nothing wrong with budget devices – or at least their shouldn’t be. While the specs in the L5II aren’t great by any means, hopefully the price should reflect that. Emerging markets are a big area of growth for handset manufacturers and Android right now, places like Africa and the Middle East are adopting mobile technology fast and hopefully, low-cost devices like these should make it easier for them to do just that.
It’s a shame about the single-core CPU and paltry 512MB of RAM but then, LG will also be offering the L7II with some added specs on top of these. It’s good to see a handset manufacturer like LG producing devices for the low-end with Android onboard, it should help people get online a lot easier around the globe and LG make some good quality handsets so hopefully these hold up pretty well.
