At the Samsung Galaxy S 4 (or if you prefer, the Galaxy S IV) launch event in New York we had the pleasure to see the new device’s features in action, acted in way that reminded me of the style in which the 1950’s American commercials were portrayed for some reason (like some of the commercials for Fallout 3 if you know them). Might be just me on that. From the ad-hoc 5-channel surround system you could make with your friends by connecting five Samsung Galaxy S 4’s using the NFC chip and Bluetooth, or the S Health system and accessories, to the photo apps that recorded sound and embedded it to pictures you took, and the Dual camera feature that used both the rear and front cameras to make a composite picture.
But the phone is said to receive a new camera functionality, one which was not ready for the presentation on the 15th of March. The new camera app is called Samsung Orb and is a new entry in the 360-degree panorama feature app category. One does not simply expect the phone to come with Jelly Bean’s own 360 panorama camera app – the Photosphere – since, you know, it’s an Android device. But, just as well, one does not simply walk into Mordor. Samsung is not alone on this decision to skip on the built-in feature in Google’s mobile OS. LG also made its own version of the feature with the Panorama VR for the Optimus G Pro.
The app is said to be currently still under development, but it should be finished and ready for deployment with the S4’s update to the next iteration of Android, the soon to be announced Key Lime Pie or Android 5.0, a thing which sammobile.com confirmed through inside intel.
If the Nexus’ Photosphere is anything to judge by, this feature will come and go without much of a fuss. At first, sure everybody was excited of the idea, and yeah, it’s a nice thing to be able to do, but the feature didn’t exactly took off, did it?
What’s your take on this? Do you have an app of this sort on your phone that you use occasionally?
